Even 40 years after its maiden flight the F-14A Tomcat was one of the most powerful and efficient fighter-interceptors in the world. In particular its long-range capability and ability to attack targets, with its AIM-54 Phoenix missiles, which were way outside its range of sight, made it an ideal fleet defender.The F-14 Tomcat was developed as the successor to the Phantom II which had proved outdated in its fighter-interceptor role.
