The USS Constitution was one of 6 frigates which was authorized for construction by Congress in 1794. She was larger & more heavily armed than the standard frigates. Built at the Edmund Hart Shipyard in Boston, Constitution gained her greatest fame during the 1812 war against Great Britain where she gained her nickname "Old Ironsides" for her solid oak construction - 18cm thick in places - with additional copper cladding to the hull.
